Leaf Relief

One of my fall art projects came from Fall Leaves.
We basically followed Cassie's instructions, except that we created leaf rubbings (using wax crayons and a black paint wash)  for the background rather than the ideas that she suggested.

What intrigued me most about the project is the "metallic" leaf created out of cardboard, leaves, tinfoil and spray paint.  In the end they really looked as if they were tarnished metal.

If I were to do it again, I would perhaps have each student create several "metal" leaves for their background.

As you'll notice, some of the backgrounds are more grey than black - I made them with different classes and added more water to the black paint.

Plaster Leaves and Fall Fans

Plaster Leaves

For some art classes it works best to work on two projects simultaneously.  I began by getting the students started on leaf rubbings.  Then I took groups of 3 or 4 students and had them do plaster leaves which I found on "That Artist Woman's" blog you can find her detailed instructions at Plaster Leaf Prints.

Once the first group had theirs done, they went back to their leaf rubbings and the next group came to do their plaster leaves.  That Artist Woman explains, it's best to apply a coat of Mod Podge to the plaster before painting the leaves to prevent the acrylic paint from being totally absorbed by the plaster.

Fall Fans

During the second class, we first painted the plaster leaf imprints with acrylic paints.  As they dried, we switched to our leaf rubbings.  They started by drawing lines about 2 centimeters apart (we have rulers that are about that width) across the back of their leaf rubbing sheets.  The score lines helped make even accordion folds. Finally we folded our leaf rubbings into some fine fall fans!

My grades 4 - 7 art class also created leaf critters.  Well, not all of the weren't actually critters...
As promised, here are some of them!

Fall Foliage - Leaf Critters

Our yard all decked out it its finest fall foliage.  Believe it or, it actually is connected to a school project!

On a lovely warm afternoon last week we walked around the colony to search for lots of different leaves.  One of the first places we stopped was our yard as this is the best place on our Huf for red leaves. We pressed them in seldom used encyclopedias :)!
Today in art art class, my primary class created these leaf critters. We added details with permanent markers and coloured chalk.  What critter can you see in each project?
Who-o-os there?

Floating by...

This is the purr-fect spot.

Penned in.
Looks fishy.

Hopping past the posies.

Wonder what my intermediate class will come up with??? I'll keep you posted.
